XEYE vs Algolia: which one to choose

Algolia is a complete search-as-a-service product: UI, facets, analytics, A/B testing and syncing with commerce platforms. XEYE is a small API that does one thing: return the elements of a list that are most similar to a text, combining fuzzy and semantic matching. If you need facets, search-as-you-type results or automatic syncing, choose Algolia. If you only need to search by meaning in a small catalogue and pay per use, XEYE is simpler.

When is Algolia the better choice?

  • You need a search UI with facets, filters, autocomplete and search-as-you-type results.
  • Your catalogue lives in Shopify, Adobe Commerce or similar and must sync on its own.
  • You want analytics, A/B testing or rules to feature products.
  • You need service guarantees, single sign-on, multiple regions or support.
  • Keyword search with typo tolerance is enough for you. The free plan covers 10,000 requests per month.

When does XEYE fit?

  • You want semantic or hybrid search without signing up for a custom-priced plan.
  • Your volume is low or irregular and you prefer prepaid credit to a variable bill.
  • You do not need a UI, facets or syncing: just "a text goes in, the best results come out".

Which one is cheaper?

It depends on what you need, and in the simplest case Algolia wins. If keyword search is enough for you and you make fewer than 10,000 requests per month, its free plan costs nothing. The same searches on XEYE cost €10.

The sums change if what you want is semantic search: on Algolia it requires the Elevate plan, which is sold with custom pricing, and on XEYE it is included from the first search.

One detail when comparing volumes: Algolia states that, with search-as-you-type results, every keystroke is a request. On XEYE you also pay for every call, so it is worth waiting until the user stops typing before searching.

What is XEYE missing?

Quite a lot, and it is better to know beforehand: it has no facets or filters, UI, catalogue syncing, analytics, client libraries or service level agreement. It is an early-stage product maintained by a single person. What it does have is measured, published results, in measured results.

Can I use both?

Yes. Nothing stops you keeping Algolia for faceted navigation and using a semantic API for one specific case, such as an FAQ search.

Frequently asked questions

Is XEYE an alternative to Algolia?

Only for one specific case: searching by meaning in a small catalogue with one API call. For a complete shop search, with facets and syncing, Algolia does much more.

Does Algolia have semantic search?

Yes, it is called NeuralSearch and it adds vector search to its keyword search. According to their pricing page, checked on 5 October 2026, it is available on the Elevate plan.

Does XEYE have a Shopify app?

No. There is a Shopify tutorial that integrates it with a proxy and a theme section, but loading the catalogue is manual.
